You will serve as an ADMINISTRATIVE/TECHNICAL SPECIALIST (Industrial Hygienist) in the Ordnance Assurance and Safety Office (00SA) of NAVSURFWARCEN IH DIV.
This position is part of the Warfare Centers Personnel Demonstration Project. The NT-04 pay band encompasses positions equivalent to the GS-11 and GS-12.
Duties
You will serve as an Industrial Hygienist and liaison collaborating with Industrial Hygienists and technicians of the Naval Medical Clinic, Navy and Marine Corps Force Health Protection Command and NSWC IHD Command and personnel.
You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations individually or as part of a team; evaluating areas that may be exposed to a wide range of physical chemical and biological hazards.
You will prepare detailed written or oral reports of survey findings including hazards identified, assessment of the hazards, exposure monitoring required and controls recommended.
You will conduct inspections to observe work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to health and safety; and detect violations of published health standards (e.g. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
You will provide consultation and advice to activities on occupational health problems and concerns, including providing toxicological data, reviewing activity safety and health instructions or participation in command safety and health meetings.

- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals).
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower pay band, NT-03 (GS-09/10 equivalency) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional hygienist conducting hygiene inspections or analyzing findings from surveys and reports to identify and evaluate occupational health hazards for a safety and occupational health program.

Education
Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:
- A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science;
or
- A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene;
or
- Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH).
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
FOR NT-04:
Education may be used to substitute specialized experience with the following:
1. Successfully completed 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree.
or
2. Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
