Duties
You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys, and evaluations individually or as part of a team.
You will evaluate areas and work operations that may be exposed to a wide range of physical, chemical and biological hazards including some for which the nature and extent of hazard(s) is not completely understood.
You will present oral briefs and provide detailed written reports of Industrial Hygiene survey findings including hazards identified and recommendations.
You will assist in designing control strategies for health and safety standards, and assist in analyzing the effectiveness of control measures.
You will interpret regulatory requirements and guidelines as applicable to different types of workplaces.
You will recommend solutions to management on reducing workplace risks.
You will conduct inspections to observe work practices and environmental conditions for hazards to health and safety and detect violations of published health standards (e.g. OSHA, U.S. CFR, DoD and DON directives).
You will gather information from local, regional and status sources to assess potential precautionary strategies that can be applied to the Command's operations.
You will create and evaluate proposed new work processes, policies, documents, guidance and/or materials for the Safety Office and Command to minimize health hazards and support Command preparedness.
You will review facility plans for new construction, renovation and modification of existing structures to control hazardous materials, noise and physical hazards.
You will assist and/or manage major occupational health programs (e.g. toxic metals, hearing conservation, ergonomics, injury and illness, etc.).
You will advise personnel on respiratory protection, storage and handling of chemicals, mold contamination, ventilation and other SOH categories as needed for Command safety, readiness and personnel education.
Requirements

- This is a bargaining unit position.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
Qualifications
Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NT-03 (GS-09/10 equivalent) pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector analyzing or inspecting workplace environmental conditions to reduce or eliminate physical, chemical, or biological hazards to workplace safety or occupational health.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
Education
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
- A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
- Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
The following education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows:
Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
or
Successful completion of three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
or
Successful completion of an LL.M. degree that is related to the position being filled.
or
A combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.
