As the System Engineering Lead within the Applied System Engineering Branch at Johnson Space Center, you will play a pivotal role in providing essential systems engineering leadership for space flight missions, encompassing payloads, vehicles, and government-furnished equipment. You will serve as the lead systems engineer for projects, steering teams towards the creation of development life cycle artifacts and ensuring the delivery of exceptional systems.

Duties

Duties described below are at the highest grade advertised. Duties assigned at lower grade levels will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee. Guides, implements, and manages project team activities including: defining system stakeholder needs, decomposing system functions, developing technical requirements, negotiating and capturing system interfaces performing design analyses. Executes the planning of system verification and validation activities, and system testing and operations. Oversees the development and implementation of systems engineering management plans, concept of operations, operational practices, system requirements documents, verification and validation plans. Manages projects as a Systems Engineering Lead guiding teams to create development life cycle artifacts, vehicle systems, and government furnished equipment. Identifies necessary artifacts to support development maturation and milestone reviews and prioritizes quality technical work for team members. Mentors junior systems engineers in the discipline of the system engineering. Collaborates with project management and chief engineer in process and standard tailoring for milestone reviews and deliverables. Manages across disciplines to develop hardware and software for vehicle systems, government furnished equipment, and payloads for space flight. Leads System Engineering and Integration activities from Cradle to Grave of the life cycle. Foster a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence and innovation. Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level: Implementing system engineering and integration activities such as conducting a trade study and developing Concept of Operations (ConOps), Systems Requirements Document (SRD), Verfication and Validation (V&V) Plans, and Flight Certifications Plans; Utilizing system engineering processes and standards to develop flight hardware; Supporting multi-discipline or cross-center teams to provide systems engineering for programs and projects. To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Overseeing system engineering and integration activities such as conducting a trade study and developing Concept of Operations (ConOps), Systems Requirements Document (SRD), Verification and Validation (V&V) Plans, and Flight Certifications Plans; Guiding the development of flight hardware and software utilizing system engineering processes and standards; Directing multi-discipline or cross-center teams to provide systems engineering support for programs and projects. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
