The primary purpose of this position is to provide support and assistance for the smooth operation of the Fitness Center Program to include customer service, monitoring customer entry, instructs in the proper conditioning and training for muscular fitness, maintaining facility requirements in fire, safety, health and cleanliness, initiating and maintaining files, and assisting manager on duty and scheduling tasks.

Duties

Monitor those entering the facility, greets customers and permits only those persons on official business to remain in the facility. Answer internal and external telephone calls and takes messages. Issue, receive, inspect, clean, repair, and/or replace recreation checkout equipment; and identify the needed repair of and/or replacement of missing parts of equipment. Clean and maintain windows, wall, shelving, floors, and etc. Assess and manage athletic programs and fields to support intramural, extramural, and varsity sports.

  • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate valid driver’s license is required for the position

  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft/vehicle to conferences, meetings, or functions away from the duty office/location. Travel may include overnight stays.

  • Must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical before entrance on duty, unless otherwise exempt.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Individual Occupational Requirements for 0189 Recreation Aid and Assistant Series. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level (or other equivalent pay systems) in federal service which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience is experience gained while performing work that included (1) group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; (2) teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; (3) aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; (4) aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; (5) summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children) (6) sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; (7) aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; or (8) aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. OR EDUCATION:Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in courses related to recreation or physical education. OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPT TO VERIFY YOUR EDUCATION. FAILURE TO SUBMIT YOUR TRANSCRIPT WILL RESULT IN AN INELIGIBLE RATING. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of a standardized body of rules, procedures and operations related to one or more indoor/outdoor recreation functions to perform the required activities in a fitness and sports environment. 2. Knowledge of fitness equipment set up, adjustment, operating procedures, and required safety rules and regulations. 3. Knowledge of standard office equipment, such as desktop computer, copiers, fax machines and office automation systems to perform a substantial range of office automation support, along with the knowledge of grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation and commonly used specialized terminology to prepare material correctly. 4. Skill in administering fitness testing and Fitness Improvement Program (FIP) Classes. 5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 6. Ability to follow established safety standards and procedures. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
