You will serve as a MECHANICAL SYSTEMS INSPECTOR (SHIPS) in the WATERFRONT INSPECTION BRANCH, NON-NUCLEAR INSPECTION DIVISION of the QUALITY ASSURANCE OFFICE at PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will inspect, witness and perform quality assurance tests on mechanical and piping equipment, devices, components and systems. You will perform in-process manufacturing and fabrication inspections. You will perform and evaluate the results of required nondestructive tests. You will perform surveillance of propulsion plant and other shipboard systems and work processes. You will investigate deficient conditions associated with software and hardware and work processes. You will perform other duties as assigned.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO INSPECT, including: Interpreting plans, diagrams, illustrative and schematic instructional material, engineering directives, and inspection requirements involved with machining, pipe fitting, welding, insulating and testing. Fabricating and installing mechanical components, rigging and piping systems, and performance of testing, ensuring the quality of workmanship required for complex submarine systems is adhered to. Identifying physical and mechanical characteristics of materials used in components, piping and systems. Utilizing tools and instruments unique to nuclear submarine propulsion plant overhaul and qualified to instruct others in their proper use. Compiling and maintaining detailed information and reports during inspections and tests.
