In this position you serve as the early childhood education specialist for all child development programs including child development center, pre-schools, family child care, school-age, special needs programs, volunteers, hourly care programs, food service and custodial, and any unique children's programs such as Sure Start.

Initiates, designs, develops, arranges for, conducts, and oversees training in early childhood development and related activities for all child development center staff, family child care program staff and providers, preschool and school-age program staff, volunteers, hourly care staff, management, administrative staff, custodial employees, food service staff and staff working an any unique settings for children such as Sure Start.
Develops, implements, maintains, and monitors and Individual Training plan for all management, care giving personnel, family child care coordinators and providers, Tracks progress, and periodically reassesses individual growth needs through discussion with individual staff members.
Ensures training programs balance the training required by directives or policy such as the Air Force Training Modules and base-specific training needs. Conducts or sponsors in-service workshops to address needs in instructional techniques, such as writing and implementing activity plans, using special teaching skills, adapting activities for the individual needs of children, and specific program areas such as family style meals and snacks, child abuse and neglect, outdoor play, parent involvement and conferences, etc.
Develops, implements, and oversees all elements of children's developmental program activities to include environment, equipment and materials, program structure, activities and experiences, and supportive interactions and positive social development for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-agers, and children with special needs receiving care.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, General Education and Training Series positions located here
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower broadband NH-01 or equivalent to the next lower grade GS-04 in the Federal Service. Specialized experiences is early childhood education experience for all child development programs including child development center, pre-schools, family child care, school-age, special needs programs, volunteers, hourly care programs, food service and custodial, and any unique children's programs such as Sure Start.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Professional knowledge of principles, theories, concepts, and practices of early childhood development encompassing infant through school age youth.
Skill in developing curricula which covers physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development.
Skill in developing, adapting, and providing training to staff members, family day care providers, and parents as well as food service and custodial staff.
Skill in identifying children with special needs and providing appropriate referrals to ensure children with special needs are assessed and accommodated.
Skill in the administration and interpretation of environmental, program, and child abuse probability assessments.
Additional Requirements of Position
May require standing, bending, stooping and lifting children whose weights range from approximately 15-40 pounds. A physical examination (including a chest x-ray or a urine test, as appropriate) is mandatory before placement.
It is AF policy that each Training & Curriculum Specialist will achieve accreditation for the Child Development Program through the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs. Maintains working relationships with professional organizations and educational institutions to gain knowledge which will improve the program and promote good community relations. Must complete additional training requirements including CPR and First-Aid, and remain current.
Education
Basic Requirements:
- Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.
or
- Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above.
For Child Development Training and Curriculum Specialist positions with the Departments of the Air Force and Navy, and Education Program Specialist positions with the Department of the Army, the education must have been in child development or early childhood education.
