This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: The position is located at the Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command, Fleet Management Expansion (FMX), Fort Moore, GA.

Duties

Perform field level maintenance and make independent judgments and decisions within the framework of accepted trade practices. Determine the cause of malfunctions and make repairs to a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles, such as light, medium and heavy combat vehicles and similar equipment. Use a wider variety of test procedures and equipment in tracing hard-to-locate problems to complete major repairs, overhauls, and modifications with little or no technical advice. Select and comply with technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides to make repairs and modifications according to specifications and procedures. Overhaul major system, such as engines or transmissions, on a wide range of vehicles and equipment. Troubleshoot and repairing the full range of systems and/or components of the supported vehicles or equipment. Conduct functional and performance tests on completed work assignments.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to mandatory random drug and alcohol testing at management request because the duties of this position require a driver License.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid military Driver's certification/license to operate equipment/vehicles for job performance, as necessary.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

Qualifications

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic (Motor Vehicle Operator) ~ without more than normal supervision. Determine the cause of malfunctions on heavy mobile equipment and combat vehicles; overhauling engines and transmissions for repairing malfunctions. Use a wider variety of test procedures and equipment in tracing hard-to-locate problems; and assist higher level mechanics repairing light, medium, and heavy mobile equipment and similar equipment on malfunctions. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. The work requires frequent and prolonged standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing and crouching. Works on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying, or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries unassisted, items weighing up to 40 pounds, and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. Frequently lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of others, or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. May work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. When indoors, is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outdoors, occasionally works in inclement weather, in heat, mud or snow, and in wet or icy areas. Both indoors and outdoors, exposure to irritations and discomfort from dust, grease, heat, asbestos, and fumes. Typically works on parts and systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Is subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard-toe shoes, and other safety equipment. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and may be worn or used for long periods of time.
