This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: The position is located at the Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command, Fleet Management Expansion (FMX), Fort Benning, GA. Fort Benning is located 100 miles south of Atlanta, GA, and adjacent to Columbus, GA and Phenix City, AL.

Duties

Serve as supervisor for scheduled services for field-level maintenance operations in support of training base equipment. Knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation and working relationships of heavy-duty systems, including such major systems as diesel, multi-fuel, turbine, supercharged, and turbo supercharged engines, transmission, etc. Maintain production reports and records. Determine equipment, supplies, and maintenance requirements used to make repairs. Select the best work methods to diagnose and correct mechanical and non-mechanical defects. Read and interpret technical manuals, modification work orders and other maintenance related forms and manuals. Use varies tools for welding, fabricating, machine shop support and field contact teams that repair heavy tactical equipment in a non-standard or field environment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position may require incumbent to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for employment.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid Government Driver certification/license to operate equipment/vehicles for job performance, as necessary.
  • Employee is required to observe established safe working procedures to ensure using appropriate mandatory protective clothing and/or equipment to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) employee required to report or remain at work to support mission operations.
  • Employee may be required to work an alternative shift of evenings and/or weekends for customer support.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Repairer Supervisor (Motor Vehicle Operator) ~ without more than normal supervision. Perform common tasks of assigning work to subordinate employees. Provide performance standards, counsel employees on performance and provide formal and informal performance appraisals. Perform field-level maintenance operations and repair on heavy mobile equipment and vehicles; troubleshoot equipment malfunctions to diagnose repair; replace and repair parts on mechanical and electrical systems on vehicles and equipment. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Work requires frequent and prolonged standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing and crouching. Works on top of, under, or in tight compartments of equipment in cramped and awkward positions. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts assemblies, and equipment. Occasionally lifts heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists and cranes. Work is sometimes performed from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside. When inside, individual is exposed to drafts, hot and cold shops, changing temperatures and noise which is difficult to talk above. When outside, individual is exposed to inclement weather working in heat, mud or snow and in wet or icy areas. Whether inside or outside, exposure to irritations and discomfort from fumes, dust, dirt, oil and grease is common. Frequently work is performed using parts and on systems which are dirty, oily, or greasy. Subject to cuts, bruises, abrasions, burns, chemical irritations, electrical shock, and injuries from falls while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Individual must follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.
