The Pathways Internship Program allows students to join VA in career positions that emphasize long-term training and development. As a Student Trainee (Admin/Office Mgmt) you will receive on-the-job training performing the general office duties required to provide office clerical support using primarily Microsoft Office software and peripheral hardware. You will be responsible for performing developmental activities and administrative tasks in support of the mission of the office assigned.

Duties

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, or technical/vocational degree or certificate (which may include Registered Apprenticeship Programs, Job Corps, Climate Corps, AmeriCorps, and Peace Corps), with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. Provide general office clerical support utilizing office automation. Use software and peripheral hardware to complete task. Prepare correspondence, memoranda, and reports in draft and final form. Edit, reformats, files, retrieves and prints documents using functions and commands. Maintain, manipulate and calculate numerical data. Use software, such as calendar, desk top publishing, project management, etc., to perform a variety of functions. Answers telephones and receives visitors.

For more information on Internship opportunities within the Department of Veterans Affairs, please visit https://www.va.gov/EMPLOYEE/pathways-program-requirements/ Pathways Student Internship: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled. (a) Adhere to the Internship Program requirements required by Federal regulation and VA policy. (b) Meet the definition of a "student" as defined in 5 CFR 362.202 as an individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842. Students need not be in actual physical attendance, so long as all other requirements are met. An individual who needs to complete less than the equivalent of half an academic vocational or technical course-load immediately prior to graduating is still considered a student for purposes of this Program. (c) Provide proof of enrollment in a qualifying educational institution and academic transcripts at the end of each academic period and upon request. (d) As applicable, at the time of appointment and upon request, demonstrate an acceptable overall Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) of at least a 2.0 or above on a 4.0 scale, as recorded on the official transcript. (e) Adhere to an established work schedule approved by the supervisor. (f) Perform, successfully, the duties and responsibilities in the assigned position description. (g) Observe all workplace rules, such as dress code, office conduct and behavior. (h) Participate in all VA mandatory training programs (either on-line or in the classroom). (i) For individuals appointed in Intern positions (without time limit) expected to last 1 year or longer, establish an IDP with the assistance of the supervisor. The IDP must be executed within 45 calendar days from the appointment date, and must be established in concert with the assignment of performance requirements, as applicable. (j) Notify the supervisor of any changes in the completion of the educational program, such as graduation date, changes in the major degree requirements, or changes in the educational institution's accreditation. (k) Submit requests for breaks in program to the supervisor within a timely manner Education/General Experience GS-3: To qualify for the GS-3, Applicants must have completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study and 6 months or (26 weeks) of general experience performing progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge, skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Applicants can combine education and experience: For example: determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. Note: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience you document, to include volunteer experience. Note: A full time work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours per week spent in such employment. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Attention to DetailCommunicationsComputer SkillsData Management Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Eligible Interns who have completed Registered Apprenticeship Programs and Job Corps can now count time served in those programs, toward the required 480 total hours, to convert to a permanent federal position. Following completion of the internship program requirements, Interns and VA have up to 180 days to convert to the competitive service. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
