As a Safety Engineer, you will be evaluating, monitoring, & performing safety risk assessments for facilities, systems, equipment, & operations at Glenn Research Center. You will work with the testing and institutional communities to ensure that regulations, policies, and standards as they relate to safety are implemented into designs, refurbishment/modification, maintenance, and operations. You will be responsible for advising management and other support organization on safety requirements.

Duties

Provide technical assistance in the interpretation and implementation of safety programs. This will include areas such as Federal Regulations, NASA Policies and Standards. Consult with all levels of management, headquarters personnel, other federal agencies, and commercial organizations to ensure that safety standards are incorporated in the design or construction of facilities, systems, or equipment. Work closely with managers and their representatives to ensure that facility operations or systems requirements definitions are compliant with applicable federal, state, and local statutes and agency policy directives. Serve on Center committees and working groups to enhance safety culture at the Center. Monitor and ensure contractor compliance with programmatic safety requirements, including assigned task requirements outlined in the specific Health and Safety Plan (HASP). Exercise expert technical knowledge of the limitations of proven concepts and practices on systems, equipment, and/or hardware to correctly evaluate problem resolution alternatives or the risk associated with facility operations and maintenance. Provide guidance and advice to project/facility teams regarding safety tools and techniques. Prepare policy documents, requirements analysis and definitions, technical evaluations, and provide recommendations to management within the functional and/or technical area of expertise. Support mishap investigations and provide advice to mishap investigation teams as required. Foster a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence and innovation. Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-11, you must have: a) You must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level: Assisting with the review of engineering plans, industrial operations work procedures, construction work plans, and/or work products that impact organizational safety and health programs; Contributing to the operations of research or scientific facilities that includes at least one of the following: evaluating risks, hazards, policies, systems, or equipment; Performing one or more of the following: worksite inspections, incident investigations, and job hazards analysis on existing and new equipment. OR b) Completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field OR c) Completed 3 full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field OR d) Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed in a), b) and c) above Your resume must include a clear and detailed narrative description, in your own words, of how you meet the required specialized experience. Other majors will qualify if the major includes or is supplemented as follows: Astronautics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Geology, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Metallurgy, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics (or other related field), if includes or is supplemented by 12 semester hours (or the equivalent) in appropriate physical science or engineering courses.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:

a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
