Duties

Summary: The primary purpose of this position is to instruct within the Air University Teaching and Learning Center's writing programs. Develops and administers Writing Center tutor training programs. Duties: Develops and presents special programs that promote development of good study skills and writing practices. Performs Writing Center Program evaluation duties. Develops and maintains materials in support of AUTLC Writing Center and AU educational programs.

  • The incumbent will provide writing assistance outside normal class hours to meet student and faculty needs, may usually lift 25 lbs or less and may stand for an extended period of time.
  • Visual acuity and color perception is necessary for computer work, checking of records and diplomas. A high degree of hand/eye coordination is also required.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the basic requirement described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Professional and Scientific Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) for the GS-1701, General Education and Training Series. BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Applicants have a degree that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position. Note: you MUST submit a copy of your transcript(s). OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Applicants have a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above. Note: you MUST submit a copy of your transcript(s). AND In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-09, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes: 1) knowledge of education theories, principles, procedure and practices, as well as maintaining reasonable comprehensive coverage of topics to develop and maintain materials in support of educational programs; 2) knowledge and skill to develop and maintain special programs to promote development materials to enhance student learning, and the ability to deliver training and conduct seminars on effective writing practices; 3) knowledge in adapting analytical techniques and evaluation criteria, making recommendations on improving and ensuring the learning materials are appropriate to the AU learning environment and to implement writing improvement effectiveness. OR EDUCATION: Applicants have successfully completed three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position. OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Applicants have a combination of experience and education to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. Note: you MUST submit a copy of your transcript(s). FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-09 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-11 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Professional knowledge of current principles and philosophy of education, its theories, practices and techniques. Knowledge of current study methods, principles and techniques. 2. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with individuals and/or groups to present a positive image and develop an effective working relationship. Ability to prioritize and organize assigned activities effectively to meet short and long-range goals and objectives. 3. Ability to motivate students and to increase interest in learning and improving their communication skills. 4. Ability to evaluate information related to programs, materials and individuals, determine effectiveness, identify problems, and recommend solutions. 5. Ability to use a computer and associated software for computer-based tutorials, word-processing, database and graphic functions. 6. Ability to devise and apply teaching methods and techniques appropriate to the background, interests and abilities of students. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
