  • Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures. Lifeguards on coastal beaches must also have surf-rescue training specified in AFI 34-110
  • Position may require pre-employment screening for swimming ability, rescue skills, and CPR skills
  • Participation in required in-service training and maintenance of physical capabilities to perform rescues throughout the period of employment are conditions of employment for this position
  • Some physical exertion required in effecting a swimming rescue. Must be able to lift and carry 45 pounds and over.
  • May provide advice and guidance (e.g., orientation, lesson plans, etc.) to lower grade lifeguards.
  • Much of the time is spent sitting, standing, or walking; however, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, or reaching is required. A physical may be required
  • Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Individual Occupational Requirements for Recreation Aid and Assistant Series, 0189 and Group Stand for Technical and Medical Support Positions. Applicants must have at least six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 level in federal service or an equivalent pay band which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position of Lead Recreation Assistant. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: is (1) any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-03 level (or equivalent in other pay systems) in the federal service in which equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of Lead Recreation Aid (Lifeguard). Specialized experience is experience while performing work that included (1) group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; (2) teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; (3) aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; (4) aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; (5) summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children) (6) sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; (7) aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; or (8) aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. OR EDUCATION: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses related to recreation (e.g., basic psychology, group dynamics, physical education, arts and crafts, etc.). OR COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100 percent. To combine education and experience, determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ABOVE APPLICANTS MUST ALSO MEET THE CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW: Applicants must submit the following certificates before entrance on duty (a) a current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills and procedures and (b) a current and valid nationally recognized basic first aid certification and (c) a current and valid nationally recognized water safety instructor certification and (d) a current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification which includes adult, child and infant procedures. FAILURE TO SUBMIT THE REQUIRED CERTIFICATES PRIOR TO ENTRANCE ON DUTY WILL RESULT IN AN INELIGIBLE RATING. Knowledge of a variety of lifesaving, first aid, CPR, water safety instruction, and associated techniques and procedures as would be acquired through previous experience. 2. Knowledge of a variety of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks, and special tasks such as providing swimming lessons under specific instructions from the supervisor. 3. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. 4. Ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants. 5. Ability to orient lower graded employees, distribute/balance work assignments, and monitor work accomplishment. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
