About the Position: This position performs a variety of security and administrative duties as the Lead Security Assistant, which grant and decline access to the Fort Leavenworth Installation.
Moving expenses, recruitment and relocation incentives are NOT authorized for this position.
Duties
As a Lead Security Assistant (Visitor Control), you will perform the following duties:
Greet customers in order to determine the services required.
Provide information to personnel regarding installation access requirements and/or procedures.
Assist incoming personnel with directions and/or security protocols throughout the installation.
Screen employees, visitors, and contractor personnel daily, requiring a great deal of patience, discretion, and diplomacy to determine status of an individual and reason for and location of visit.
Use automated database to complete visitor passes and/or weapons registrations.
Review completed work to ensure deadlines have been met.
Track employee performance to recommend needed training development.
Provide on the job training to new employees to ensure understanding of work processes.
Advise team members on problem solving methods and/or techniques regarding security issues.
Requirements
- This position requires the incumbent to be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance.
- Shift work is required. Hours of work encompass fluctuating tours of duty to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
- This position is designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report or remain at work to support the mission.
- Must be able to obtain and sustain state certification for operating the NCIC terminals within 6 weeks.

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience screening request for controlled area access to determine eligibility; providing guidance and/or information on security regulations and procedures; and operating automated systems utilized in the registration process for access to control areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
OR
Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).

*Current employees applying under VEOA are subject to time-in-grade restrictions like any other GS employee.
