The primary purpose of this position, Composite/Plastic Inspector Leader, WL-4352-11 is to lead three or more workers to troubleshoot, evaluate, inspect, refinish, repair, test, modify and maintain advanced composite components, internal and external to the aircraft structure and low observable systems and subsystems and any applicable aircraft specialized coatings.

Duties

Lead a team of trades and/or labor workers Perform nonsupervisory trades and/or labor work that is usually of the same kind and level as members of the crew led Inspect all composite or plastic parts, assemblies, sub-assemblies or structures with straight and curved surfaces that have a number of interconnecting parts and components that have been repaired, modified or overhauled Conduct and witness inspections and tests on a variety of fabricated and repair work performed by others on structural and nonstructural airframe components, equipment, and completed airframes affecting Low Observable (LO) coatings and related components Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work area

  • Must be able to pass a physical examination required to work around toxic chemicals and be able to wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • May be required to work an uncommon tour of duty, scheduled and unscheduled overtime, or rotating shifts
  • May be required to travel (TDY) any place, any time, and in any manner to support the unit’s mission, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3400 Pliable Material Work Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is Ability To Lead Or Supervise JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (Theoretical, precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes blueprint reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Materials PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Efforts: Work encompasses standing, bending, stooping, stretching and working in strained cramped conditions. Frequently handles, lifts, and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionaly lifts and moves heavier items with assistance from others or with weight lifting equipment. May be required to uncrate or load and move metal/composite parts and other repair items. Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside and is subjected to noise and vibration from shop machines, high temperatures from curing ovens and heat lamps and to a variety of weather conditions. Work conditions frequently include exposure to dust, fumes and toxic and/or potentially flammable and explosive chemicals that can cause skin, eye, and lung irritations. Employee could also be exposed to injury while operating machines and power tools. Required to wear safety glasses, hearing protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE) when performing duties.
