This position is located within the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven, Connecticut serving as the Anatomic Pathology Supervisor, Pathologists' Assistant and Histopathology Supervisor for two Medical Centers (West Haven and Newington campus) and their supporting outpatient clinics.
Duties

Supervises specialty sections including surgical pathology, grossing, autopsy, histology and anatomic pathology, laboratory information management and morgue areas;
Oversees reference testing, specialized procedures, quality control reports and analysis;
Serves as the direct line supervisor for a team of research support staff that includes research coordinators and assistants, etc.;
Implements interaction with other institutions that have responsibility for care of patients with anatomic pathology specimens;
Ensures compliance with all regulatory agency proficiency testing within the scope of practice of the technical processing of specimens;
Serves as a training program director for Pathologist Assistant programs from affiliated local academic institutions;
Develops policies and procedures related to pathology assignments;
Orients and instructs supervisors, residents and pathologist assistant students and other medical students;
Oversees all quality assurance and quality control for the department in order to ensure appropriate accreditations;
Prepares various reports and correspondence;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Qualifications
All applicants must meet the Basic Education Requirement: Possess a Bachelor's degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university in a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position (i.e. pathology, histopathology, etc.). In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement, all applicants meet one of the following minimum qualifications:
Specialized Experience: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-9) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of this position. Specialized experience includes supervising or leading others in performing assignments related to the technical, administrative, and clinical/pathology activities of an organization that support medical staff in the diagnosis of diseases; ensures accurate collection and processing of specimens; prepares reports to describe findings of testing; general administration, planning and oversight of all matters relating quality control/improvement functions; coordinates and manages activities to include maintaining records, answering inquiries and complaints and providing guidance to staff, managers and/or visitors; advising clinical coordinators and staff in the interpretation, understanding and compliance of clinical and administrative policies and regulations. Education: Successfully completed three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field related to the work that provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (beyond the master's degree) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. Physical Requirements: The work of this position requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing and bending during prolonged periods of bench work, bending over microscopes, and prolonged interaction with a computer, reaching for supplies or materials, and lifting moderately heavy items. The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions (e.g., working in a hospital laboratory where there is risk of exposure to contagious diseases, carcinogenic materials, caustic reagents, noxious fumes, flammable liquids, and low-level radiation). Protective clothing and gear where appropriate, is required.
