In this position, you will work as a nurse practitioner in the sections of pediatric anesthesia and anesthesia research within the Clinical Center, Department of Perioperative Medicine (DPM). The ideal candidate for this position is certified in Family Practice, has experience treating pediatric and young adult patients with intellectual disabilities and/or rare diseases, and has experience or an interest in working in a research environment.

Duties

Apply experimental theories and new developments to the solution of complex health care problems in children and adults, including individuals with developmental disabilities. Perform clinical intake upon arrival, medical history, physical and neurologic examinations, order entry, and medical supervision of assessments in the clinic. Perform and document physical assessments and patient histories, and administer or assist with other psychological assessments and clinical rating scales. Predict and analyze trends in patient conditions and develop a patient management plan in response to the data obtained. Participate in quality assurance and quality control activities as they relate to protocol adherence, protocol monitoring, data collection, data abstraction, and data analysis. Independently provide patient and family counseling and health education to a diverse and complex patient population, with consideration of the patient’s learning needs, learning readiness, and impediments to the process. Collaborate with nursing colleagues in the development and implementation of research studies that validate standards of practice and delineate nursing care requirements.

  • The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as recurring bending, walking, lifting, or moving patients and/or equipment weighing over 50 pounds.
  • The incumbent works in an environment which serves as both a hospital and a research institution.
  • There is a risk of exposure to infectious diseases, radioactive materials, electrical hazards, irritant chemicals, construction noise and/or explosive gases. Exposure to such materials may result in long-range effects to health.
  • This position is designated as an "emergency essential" position.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.

Qualifications

You meet the basic qualification requirements for this Nurse Practitioner position if you: Possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. NOTE: Degree from a Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools; AND Have passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) or obtained licensure before the implementation of the NCLEX-RN. Individuals who have not passed the NCLEX-RN, but meet all other qualification requirements will be subject to a comprehensive evaluation of both their education and experience prior to final appointment; AND Possess a current, active, full and unrestricted license, or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position. Additional qualification requirements for the GS-0610-13: In addition to the basic requirements above, you must have at least 1 year of professional nursing experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing comprehensive nursing care in a clinical or research setting; independently providing patient and family counseling and health education to complex patient populations; independently assessing acute and non-acute clinical problems; and collaborating with multidisciplinary research teams to ensure that patient management strategies are successful in meeting patient care and research needs. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
