About the Position: This position is with Public Health - West, Occupational Health Sciences, Industrial Hygiene located at Fort Sam Houston, TX.
Duties
Conduct surveys to evaluate existing potential health hazards and recommends solutions to problems.
Ensure compliance with established occupational safety and health regulations.
Determine compliance with Threshold Limit Values (TLV) or Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL).
Calibrates and/or ensures compliance with existing calibration schedules for all industrial hygiene equipment.
Use standard industrial hygiene principles, methods, and practices to detect and eliminate potential or existing hazards.
Adhere to guidelines to include Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, agency manuals and directives, textbooks, professional journals, literature, etc.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires a Secret security clearance.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
- This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
- This position may involve exposure to various unpleasant and potentially hazardous conditions during inspections including noise, toxic chemicals, and heat and cold.
- This position involves moderate physical exertion which includes carrying equipment, climbing, standing, walking, and bending.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- This is an Inclement Weather Essential position; you must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.

Specialized Experience: One year specialized experience which includes experience assessing work practices and conditions for hazards to the health and safety of workers; conducting surveys to evaluate existing potential health hazards and recommend solutions to problems; perform sampling using standard methods to establish the nature and degree of hazards, and industrial products; calibration and use of a wide variety of industrial hygiene sampling instrumentation to be able to select appropriate sampling equipment and techniques to determine the nature and degree of hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
