Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) mission is to lead the DoD in finance and accounting by ensuring the delivery of efficient, exceptional quality pay and financial information.

Duties

All responsibilities described are at the full performance level GS-05 and if filled at the lower grade of GS-04 will be developmental in nature. Balancing, reconciling and researching discrepancies; assisting higher graded technicians in maintaining more complex accounts; receiving a limited variety of accounting documents and/or transactions. Reviewing and examining accounting documents verifying the mathematical accuracy and completeness of data and determining necessary processing actions. Reviewing documents for correct authorizations and validity of accounting classifications; classification of a group of related transactions to proper account codes. Perform various duties involving the maintenance of ledgers or accounting data. Posting and inputting data verified against source documents into automated accounting systems.

Requirements

  • This national security position, which may require access to classified information, requires a favorable suitability review and security clearance as a condition of employment. Failure to maintain security eligibility may result in termination
  • Obtain/Maintain Financial Management Certification
  • Due to the nature of this work, regular telework is not authorized for this position. The incumbent of this position will be required to be physically on-site full-time.

Qualifications

GS-04: One year of general experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-03) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required. General experience for the GS-04 level is defined as: Progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of the next lower grade (GS-4) within the federal service, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position, is required. Specialized Experience at the GS-05 is defined as: Performing duties that support the processing of financial/accounting transactions using standardized procedures that may include reviewing financial/accounting systems information/documents for accuracy/completeness, inputting financial/accounting information into automated systems, or correcting invalid financial/accounting transactions. Paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual, community, student, social) is qualifying. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience.

Education

GS-04 Substitution of Education for Experience: Two years of successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation, or the equivalent, is a prerequisite may be substituted to meet the general experience required. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. If you are using education to substitute for the specialized experience, you must submit transcripts at the time you apply. To be creditable, education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. You must report only attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (http://www2.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html).

    • Qualifying education from colleges and universities in foreign countries must be evaluated in terms of equivalency to that acquired in U.S. colleges and universities. Applicants educated in whole or in part in foreign countries must submit sufficient evidence, including transcripts, to an accredited private organization for an equivalency evaluation of course work and degree. You must provide a copy of the letter containing the results of the equivalency evaluation upon request. Failure to provide such documentation when requested will result in lost consideration.
