About the Position: This position is with the Department of Pathology located at Tripler Army Medical Center, which is on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii. Tripler Army Medical Center is a tobacco-free workplace. Tobacco products include, but are not limited to, smoking, smokeless tobacco, and electronic nicotine delivery devices.

Duties

Conduct necessary quality control procedures. Perform a variety of medical laboratory technician duties, and non-technical support services that help ensure the quality of test data, continuity of testing, and performance reliability of the automated systems. Train personnel on Core Laboratory equipment and documentation requirements. Use test equipment to verify function and proper transfer of data. Use data system software to generate data reports. Calibrates various analyzers as required. Perform inventory and ordering procedures. Perform moderately difficult and complex laboratory examinations. Perform all documented procedures in standard operating manuals and test evaluations. Manage patient results status by verifying and certifying results input into laboratory computer system.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • This position requires the employee to wear a uniform, scrubs, or other appropriate medical professional attire while on duty.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) independently performing a variety of standardized and complex medical laboratory tests and examinations; 2) reviewing findings against established quality control values, quality assurance procedures and/or sampling or preparing reports of findings; 3) providing training on laboratory techniques and procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). OR Education: Successful completion of at least one full year of undergraduate-level education that is directly related to the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify. Licensure/Certification: This position requires a certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD (HA)) or their designee as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Lab Scientist (MLS), or Medical Lab Technician (MLT). For current U.S. military members, this position requires successful completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently holding the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician).
