Duties

Serves as the BOP's liaison with numerous outside entities, to include, the DOJ and all DOJ components, other government agencies and contract organizations. Responsible for providing a baseline of network performance and bandwidth utilization. This involves using various network management platforms to obtain vital network statistics at regular intervals to establish if the network is working as designed. Works with the Information Security Section to address network security vulnerabilities identified by the Justice Security Operations Center (JSOC) and routine audits. Maintains an accurate inventory of the equipment supporting the network infrastructure to verify all hardware and software is up to date. Works with local Information Technology (IT) staff and contracted project managers (PM) to install hardware, software, increase bandwidth, and regulate access to the public internet.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements. Basic Requirements: Education: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience at this grade level. OR Experience: You must have IT related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below: Attention to detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. Oral communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. AND Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower level in federal government. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Such experience is typically gained in the IT field or through the performance of work where the primary concern is IT. Some examples of this qualifying experience are: Experience that demonstrates extensive background and understanding of architectural and topology design of LANs and WANs and knowledge of how to configure the core switching environment using Cisco’s Virtual Switching System (VSS). Experience with designing and configuring high availability/fault tolerance using Cisco networking products to include, but not limited to, configuring Cisco Nexus 7000, Catalyst 6800, 6500, 4500E, 4500X, 3850, 3650, and 3560G switching platforms to support the campus access layer. Experience in configuring Virtual LANs (VLANs), Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), 802.1q tagging, trunked uplink interfaces, Layer 3 routing protocols such as EIGRP, BGP, OSPF, etc. Experience in using RFC 1918 private IPv4 addressing to provide sufficient subnets and hosts for specific network requirements as well as experience configuring access groups, access lists, and configuring different security zones based on the requirement. Experience understanding, designing, and applying security policies using Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) or Firewall Service Module (FWSM). Experience in configuring the network infrastructure and network security controls to support deploying resources into Amazon or Microsoft Cloud environments. Experience performing detailed site surveys to support Wireless LAN (WLAN), design the WLAN infrastructure, and provide a Bill of Materials (BOM). AND Selective Placement Factor: Applicants applying for this position MUST also possess the following Selective Factor. In the event that you do not possess the Selective Factor, you will be found ineligible for the position. Applicant must have been working on Cisco hardware and software for the past 24 consecutive months. NOTE: All applicants MUST clearly address the Selective Factor in their resume. If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities. **Your eligibility for consideration will be based on your responses to the questions in the application.**
