The primary purpose of this position is to provide support in managing the base fitness program and provide technical advice in all aspects of the program.
Duties
Develops and monitors an annual fitness plan that includes all core and enhanced fitness programs as well as activities and programs implemented in coordination with other base organizations.
Performs first level supervisory personnel management responsibilities.
Serves as advisor to the Fitness Cener Director on all fitness and wellness issues.
Develops, implements, monitors and documents a comprehensive fitness training program to ensure all staff members possess the necessary skills and knowledge for their positions.
Organizes and executes special events specifically designed to challenge and improve overall fitness level of participants to include 5K and 10K runs, Mini-triathlons, Warrior Runs, fitness challenges, and incentive programs.
Directs, plans, coordinates and administers the operation of a self-sustainng retail operation.
Complies with health, safety and environmental rules and procedures and performs work in a manner that enhances the safety of the work wnvironment.

- National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) or National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF) Management has decided this position must meet the requirements of AFI 34-266 para 4.3.
- Must be physically capable of providing vigorous interactive group exercise instruction for a one-hour session, four times per week. Sessions will vary and may include running, walking, circuit training, strength training, push-ups and sit-ups
- Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic first aid from American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required
- A pre-employment physical is required
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Administrative and Management Positions, GS 0188 series.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-07, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience includes: knowledge of a wide range of principles, concepts, and techniques to fitness programming such as would be gained through extensive experience in planning and conducting programs, which knowledge enable me to independently plan and conduct a large fitness program. OR
EDUCATION: Successfully completed a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B or J.D., if related. Major study -general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
OR
COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of qualifying specialized experience and education that when combined total at least 100 percent. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT COPIES OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-07 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of fitness programming which consists of exercise and health sciences, kinesiology, sports nutrition and exercise requirements
2. Knowledge of safety and security regulations, practices, and procedures
3. Knowledge of effective instructional techniques and curriculum development
4. Ability to plan, organize, and manage the functions of the program. Skill in effectively organizing and utilizing all available resources within the program framework
5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
6. Knowledge of budgeting principles, resale operations, and contract establishment
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
