The primary purpose of this position is to perform a full range of plastic media blasting, including surface preparation on T-1 and T-6 aircraft, aircraft parts and aerospace ground equipment (AGE). Assist in applying protective coatings to aircraft and support equipment.

Duties

- Prepares aircraft surfaces, aircraft parts, and support equipment by mechanically or chemically removing old paint and primer coatings in accordance with (IAW) technical orders - Preps, washes, de-prep, and inspect aircraft after wash in accordance with technical data and job guides. - Assist in applying coating materials using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other means of application. Maintains, good working relationships. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment - Controls tools. Accomplishes operational and maintenance record keeping, both manual and automated, associated with aircraft maintenance and repair.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4100, Painting and Paperhanging Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of a Painter without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of and skill in applying standard preparation and coating methods of paints and thinning additives, solvents and precoating agents, etc. and techniques used to prepare and remove aircraft coatings using plastic media techniques and then to prepare aircraft surface and paint aircraft. One (1) year in at least three (3} years performing aircraft painting, blasting, washing, and general maintenance in a high tempo maintenance environment is highly desirable. 2. Knowledge of and ability to assist in the service, maintenance, cleaning and use of bead blast paint removal equipment IAW owner's manual and other technical data. 3. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, procedures, and current Federal, state, local, and Air Force regulations pertaining to hazardous waste management, and supply procedures, the publication order system, and documentation procedures. 4. Skill in determining the standard methods, techniques, devices, and materials best suited to obtain the surface condition and finish required on aircraft. 5. Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. 6. Ability to work and interact with others in a business-like manner. Ability to read and follow directions that explain how to prepare and paint aircraft. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The painter prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and in situations where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places. This requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, be strapped into swing stages, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Ability to lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. Occasionally, may be required to handle materials and equipment that weigh 40 pounds and over. WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done inside and outside, with dirt, spray, and fumes usually present. The painter is sometimes required to prepare, treat, and finish surfaces outside in all types of weather. Protective equipment and clothing such as safety shoes, safety glasses or sunglasses, gloves, rain gear, hard hats, coveralls, respirators and other protective gear are required and are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Frequent ·exposure to the possibility of cuts and bruises; may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Exposure to toxic paints, chemicals, or other hazards may require occupational health examinations.
