The incumbent is a working leader who leads employees in performing work, which is typical of the Trades and Labor occupations. Incumbent leads any or all of the assigned employees for any specified time frame, dependent upon the type of construction project to be accomplished.

Incumbent works closely with all new installations, in-house projects, inspection and review of project blueprints, inspection of contractor submittals, and review of new equipment and material submitted by vendors. Incumbent is responsible for routine tasks which include checking inventory of shop supplies and materials to ensure that proper quantity is on hand at¯ all times; ordering needed equipment, parts and supplies to complete repairs; assigning work orders; inspection of equipment, equipment rooms, work areas, cleanliness and safety. Construction activities include planning methods and materials to be used; determining manpower requirements; directing work activities.
Incumbent will assume temporary supervisory responsibilities as assigned during those periods when the Maintenance Supervisor is not present (available) or on duty. Incumbent will assume additional responsibilities and duties as Shop or Medical Center needs dictate or at the discretion of the Maintenance Supervisor or Engineering Management. Incumbent must be willing to work odd hours, if required, including but not limited to weekend and shift work. Supervisor will call on incumbent for technical information and short-term projects on an irregular' basis. Supervisor may call on incumbent for a variety of other duties as needed on an irregular basis.
Incumbent performs rough and finished carpentry work necessary for building construction, repair or alterations of any 'structure at the KC VAMC. Incumbent may be required to perform as backup to locksmthing duties, such as changing locks and combination lock cores. Incumbent repairs and installs door closers, hinges, checking cylinders and door latches. Incumbent performs drywall patching,. and painting..

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbent stands for extended periods of time while operating machinery. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, stooping, crawling, and climbing on ladders, scaffolding, and rooftops. Incumbent lifts or moves materials weighing up to 41 kilograms (90 pounds) with the use of assistance of lifting devices or other workers for heavier items.
