This position is located in the Facilities Management Service at the VA Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities will include:
Leading employees in the performance of work.
Performing on the
Scheduling training for shop employees according to policy and procedures.
Making recommendations as to the approval of leave.
Answering questions from supervisors and other workers.
Performing maintenance and repair of architectural, mechanical, and electrical components of buildings
Installing, modifying, and repairing furniture items, doors, windows, floor coverings, baseboards, and signage.
Installing, modifying, and repairing plumbing and electrical systems.
Conducting inspections and performing routine maintenance on area of responsibility assigned.
Constructing/framing metal stud dry wall partitions and drywalling, mudding, taping, and plastering.
Patching and painting various surfaces.
Installing, modifying, maintaining, and repairing electrical wiring systems, related switches, distribution panels, and outlet boxes.
Installing and making uncomplicated repairs on a variety of small domestic and commercial heating, furnaces, refrigeration, and air conditioning units and systems.
Performing welding duties using electric and wire feed, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes to weld various types of metal in various sizes, shapes, and thickness.
Constructing concrete structures (walls, slabs, footers, forms, etc.).
Planning and measuring various materials according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions.
Reading and interpreting work orders, instructions, sketches, blueprints, building codes, and wiring diagrams.
Using and maintaining equipment and tools common to various trades.
Making repairs on and performing preventative maintenance on shop tools and equipment to ensure safe and proper function.
Overseeing the requisition of materials, tools, and equipment as necessary to perform assigned duties.
Planning the materials, tools, and techniques needed and for completing the work.
Performing related duties as required.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm; if needed employee may be required to occasionally work odd hours including but not limited to weekend and shift work to meet service and project needs. To be discussed during the interview process.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The duties of this position require considerable movement around the hospital and involve bending, lifting, crawling through restrictive areas, and working from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms both in- and outside buildings. The Maintenance Mechanic Leader must frequently lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift equipment or materials weighing 50 pounds or more with proper equipment. Assignments may require standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
The Maintenance Mechanic Leader works in all areas throughout the medical center. Inside areas may be dirty, dusty, and greasy and contain bad odors. The employee is subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds; exposed to moderately high noise levels; exposed to dust, fumes, and dirt; exposed to possible strains, cuts, electrical shock, bruises, burns, and infections; occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Outside duties are performed in all types of weather. The use of protective devices such as ear plugs, safety glasses, gloves, clothing, and safety equipment is required as needed.
(SCREEN-OUT): Applicants must have the ability to lead or supervise. Requires experience and knowledge in a variety of maintenance trades; directing and guiding a maintenance crew on a wide variety of trade work; scheduling and assigning work; providing on-the-job training; and inspecting work done by subordinates.
