As a Senior Principal Investigator in the Exploration Research and Technologies Programs Directorate, Spaceport Technologies Office, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership to the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in support of multiple NASA programs. You will oversee the technical activities of the APL and its group of highly skilled scientists and engineers and ensure that the work conducted is completed on time and in a proficient manner.

Duties

Conduct interdisciplinary research in electronics engineering and physics for sensor development and implementation, discovery, application and dissemination of knowledge in the areas of engineering science, physical science and advanced mathematic. Develop, test, evaluate, and maintain advanced electronic and physical systems, including passive and active cryogenic systems, ensuring their effectiveness in various applications for aerospace research and technology development endeavors. Lead, formulate, conduct, and oversee the performance of projects required to support current and future NASA exploration missions in applied physics, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and scientific standards. Respond to solicitations and develop proposals to obtain funding for research and technology development projects. Monitor and collaborate on contracted work, ensuring projects meet specified goals and are executed effectively, both externally and on-site. Publish research results and present research findings at professional conferences both internal and external to the agency. Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. Please keep this in mind when indicating the lowest grade you will accept. To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level: Serving as a principal investigator and active participant on research projects of a medium to large scale focused on passive or active cryogenic systems; Serving as a lead author on technical publications and presenting findings at conferences; Applying interdisciplinary scientific principles, particularly in electronics engineering and physics, for sensor development and implementation. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
