As an AST, Electronics Instrumentation Systems Engineer within the Exploration Systems and Operations Division, you will serve as Senior Technical Expert responsible for providing technical evaluations on instrumentation spanning Flight and Ground interfaces across multiple programs, and contractors. You will lead a highly specialized technical team involved in the design, development, fabrication, operations, and sustaining of Flight and Ground Electronic Instrumentation Systems.

Duties

Serves as technical management expert for instrumentation system design, development, fabrication, verification and validation testing, troubleshooting, operations, and sustaining engineering. Provides independent technical evaluations and resolutions by coordinating with highly specialized technical teams on flight and ground instrumentation issues spanning across multiple programs, centers, and contractors. Provides technical leadership and direction during launch operations for Artemis Hazardous Gas Leak Detection, Sensor Data Acquisition, and Weather Subsystems. Oversees test, checkout, launch, and recovery activities of supporting contractors for Artemis Program. Represents Instrumentation Branch from a technical perspective to outside centers and organizations. Serves as senior technical lead covering test, checkout and launch countdown of Artemis flight vehicle with respect to associated instrumentation systems including technical requirements, Launch Commit Criteria, and work procedures. Serves as an authoritative source of information related to flight and ground instrumentation systems providing support to Engineering Review and Program Control Boards for decisions and guidance concerning changes in operations. Providing technical authority as a subject matter expert in identifying and resolving technical anomalies and performance deficiencies on instrumentation systems. Maintains multiple ground and flight instrumentation certifications in order to support resource areas of single point failures.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level: Serving as a technical lead on the development of an electronics instrumentation subsystem during at least three of the following phases: design, development, fabrication, testing, troubleshooting, requirements verification and validation, or systems operation; Executing the Instrumentation Subsystem Surveillance List in support of Certificate of Flight Readiness to include assessing, developing, and presenting overall subsystem technical readiness for launch to Chief Engineers; and Performing terminal launch console functions to include one of the following: instrumentation systems executing procedures, monitoring Launch Commit Criteria, coordinating post-flight data review, or launch margin verification assessments. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
