About the Position: Serves as a Security Guard for the National Museum of the United States (NMUSA). Performs a full range of duties to include performing various aspects of enforcing rules and regulations governing traffic control, parking, building or other facility access, and physical security breaches.
Duties
Inspect containers, personal property, documents on private, commercial, and governmental vehicles.
Perform security guard duties in accordance with appropriate regulations to detect and prevent theft, damage, accident, trespass, sabotage and espionage and to enforce the security and safety regulations of the installation.
Question suspicious persons and warns or detains violators of laws, regulations, policies, rules or posted warnings.
Conduct foot or vehicle patrol of perimeters, roadways, parking and other high traffic areas as well as interior of shops, storage, administrative and other structures.
Conduct vehicle searches/inspections in accordance with standing operating procedures.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.
- Drug testing designated position and requires a pre-employment drug screen and random screening thereafter. Must sign the DA Form 5019, Condition of Employment.
- Shift work is required, or a change in work shift may be necessary. Hours of work encompass fluctuating tours of duty to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
- Must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify annually and semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
- Must successfully obtain and maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Will be required to pass entry level and annual re-certification of standard Army physical fitness/agility test (PAT) in accordance with Army Regulation 190-56.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
- This position requires wearing a uniform, bullet proof vest and other security/law enforcement equipment.
- This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
- Must be able to pass initial and annual medical examinations.
- This position is designated as mission essential. Incumbent may be required to remain on duty or report for duty during severe weather or other installation closings.
Qualifications
Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to Veterans preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment. If there are no Veterans preference eligible applicants available, non-preference applicants may be considered.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes detection and prevention of theft, damage, and/or trespassing, performing vehicle searches, confiscating unauthorized items, directing traffic flow, verifying identification and controlling access to premises. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
