You will serve as a Supervisory Paralegal Specialist in the Torts Branch-Aviation, Space & Admiralty with the responsibility of supervising and directing Paralegal Specialists and other legal support staff in all phases of litigation, including proper case file organization, document production, trial preparation, trial, mediations and settlements and providing direct paralegal support to certain attorneys within the office.
Duties
The duties and responsibilities for a Supervisory Paralegal Specialist, GS-0950-12 generally include, but are not limited to, the following:
Providing administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit
Researching legislation, regulations, and precedents for the most complex cases, such as those requiring research of statutory, regulatory, court and/or administrative precedents, and other legal opinion or documentary materials
Coordinating, assigning and performing the on-going development and daily maintenance of the ASA document guidelines applied in many assignments at this level may be limited to basic legislation, implementing regulations, and agency policies
Utilizing automated legal databases to conduct searches for information to be used as evidence.
Searching legal databases or retrieving cases to verify case citation and to assist attorneys in preparation of their briefs
Requirements
- You must be a United States Citizen or National.
- You must successfully pass a security/background investigation and a drug screening.
- You must be a current Federal employee within the Department of Justice Civil Division on a Competitive Service appointment.
- You must meet all applicable time-in-grade requirements by the closing of this announcement.

- Supervisory probationary period may be required.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position of Supervisory Paralegal Specialist, (GS-0950-12), you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below AND possess the required specialized experience specific to this series and grade.
If you are a current Department of Justice Civil Division employee on a permanent appointment in the competitive service, you will need to demonstrate 1-year (52-weeks) at the next lower grade level, to meet the time-in-grade requirements for this occupational series and grade.
To qualify for the GS-12 Supervisory Paralegal Position, you must demonstrate that you have one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 performing duties such as conducting legal research; drafting, legal pleadings, briefs, motions etc.; participating in all aspects of discovery and assisting attorneys with case development; serving as an advisor to line staff; and setting priorities to ensure the timely completion of work assignments.
