This position is part of the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The incumbent serves as a senior strategic advisor for Deputy Directorate for Joint Strategic Planning, Director J-5 ; the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff ; and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other senior members of the Joint Staff and Office of the Secretary of Defense regarding the strategic environment, strategic assessments, scenario development, defense policy, and risk..
Duties
As a STRATEGIC ADVISOR (JOINT STRATEGIC PLANNING) at the GS-0301-15 some of your typical work assignments may include:
Supports the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by providing information, analysis, briefings, studies, and reports.
Responsible for providing advice and expertise as a subject matter expert on strategy development, strategy risk assessment and combatant command organization and alignment issues.
Provides input on the development of a vision and strategy for the Division and Directorate, including the development of goals and objectives that will enable the Division to accomplish its mission.
Leads major analyses that focus on the effectiveness and efficiency of various operations of the Division.
Undertakes complex projects associated with the entire SSD portfolio.
Formulates, evaluates, and coordinates the development of policies and plans.
Serves as a representative for the Division with other senior DOD staff.
Analyzes new and proposed legislation or regulations to determine impact on program operations.
Delivers briefings and speaks at staff meetings and conferences on behalf of the division and Deputy Directorate.

Qualifications
You may qualify at the GS-15, if you fulfill the following qualifications:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service:
Recognizing management, program, and organizational principles and practices sufficient to provide advisory services, as well as support to key agency personnel;
Reviewing missions, goals, and objectives of the DOD, the Directorate, and the Division and recognizing policies, procedures, and doctrine applicable to the division and directorate as well as the ability to interpret this guidance and provide authoritative advice to key decision makers;
Conducting complex analyses and identify and propose solutions to problems that are often characterized by their breadth, importance, and critical nature, and for which previous reviews and routine management techniques are either unavailable or not directly applicable;
Identifying policy and strategy development processes for current and future strategic environments, DoD combatant command capabilities and force structure, and operational and doctrinal concepts, sufficient to provide authoritative assistance to senior military leaders on policy and strategy issues impacting the nation and the Department's contribution to national security;
Identifying the Chairman of the Joint Staff's (CJCS) statutory responsibilities to assist the President and Secretary of Defense in providing strategic direction for the Joint Force and how CJCS participates in Department and Interagency deliberative planning process to carry out these responsibilities using the Joint Strategic Planning System as a guide.

Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
