About the Position: This position is located at the Directorate of Personnel and Family Readiness, Exceptional Family Member Services, on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA.

Duties

Maintain a cooperative relationship among program components in order to ensure delivery of integrated program services, better identify community service and resource requirement and monitor compliance with public laws mandating education. Maintain accurate information on family members with special needs in the community that are enrolled in the program. Coordinate the provision of recreational and cultural programs for handicapped family members which may include sports, summer camp, arts and crafts, music and dance therapy. Identify existing resources in the civilian community that may offer similar programs and arranges for participation of special needs Family members. Assist in maintaining a comprehensive listing of military and civilian special education and health-related services. Incumbent assumes an advocacy role in support of military personnel and assignment success by interviewing parents to evaluate special skills and needs, providing information.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-investigation requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • Appointment to this position may be subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Temporary Duty Travel may be required 5% of the time to attend training.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in behavioral or social science, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, such as Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR C. Experience: Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience for GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in applying behavioral/social science principles and practices; providing general service such as conducting interviews with clients, relatives, and others to obtain pertinent information; completing intake for referral to appropriate agency such as local military and civilian health and human service agencies capable of meeting the various educational, medical, and/or psychological needs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as Social Work, Counseling, or Psychology. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify). (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
