About the Position: This position the incumbent will serve as the Senior Community Relations (COMREL) Public Affairs (PA) Specialist for U.S. Army North (USARNORTH) on Joint Base Fort Sam Houston San Antonio. The position provides public affairs advice, authority, technical expertise, and management support to leadership.
Duties
Plans and arranges news media coverage; maintains an active web/social media presence; and arranges, advises on, and/or provides visual information services for documentation and/or publicity purposes.
As the Senior Community Relations (COMREL) Public Affairs (PA) Specialist, directs and evaluates a major public affairs function with ensuring public affairs activities comply with legal and regulatory requirements and meet customer needs.
Responds to, or leads initiative to respond to information requests on the organization’s program from the news media and specialized and general publics.
Researches, drafts, coordinates, produces, and reviews public affairs products such as news releases, talking points, fact sheets, web-based content, briefings, speeches, newsletters, photographs, videos, pod casts, and other materials.
Participates in policy formulation; advises on the potential public reaction to proposed policies, plans, and actions.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires travel away from duty station (TDY) up to 25% of the time. Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance.
- Required to be on call and/or to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes executing strategic communications programs for public dissemination of information; responding to media inquiries to include issues of sensitive nature; providing guidance to staff and advice to leadership on effective public affairs tactics, strategies and evaluation of outcomes. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12)
