Employees at this level who are not leads or supervisors are trained to work in one or more difficult and complex modalities performing procedures related to these modalities as well as intermediate Quality Management duties. The incumbent performs routine and complex magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations on all body regions.
Duties
Major duties of an Advance Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI) include but are limited to:
Overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the general diagnostic radiography area leading multiple techs at the GS-09 level.
Works closely with the technologists, radiologists, clinicians, and clerical staff to ensure efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic exam results, optimum quality control, patient, and staff satisfaction.
Evaluates critical and emergency procedures and rearranges schedule to accommodate the situation.
Provides technical and professional services as delegated by the Chief of Imaging and the Imaging Manager.
Responsible for quality assurance of all diagnostic x-rays and fluoroscopy images, maintaining high quality radiographs produced by staff technologists.
Maintains necessary data for quarterly quality assurance reports.
Oversees shift operations, which includes three shifts per day.
Guides and directs students rotating through the Imaging Department.
Technologist Staff Scheduling: Oversees staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations, monthly work, and on-call schedules.
Ensures that adequate quantities of general diagnostic supplies are available to meet workload demands.
Trains new employees in general diagnostic radiography.
Attends inservices, departmental meetings and committee meetings, as assigned.
Works holidays on a rotating basis and covers shifts on the emergency call-out schedule.
Responsible for working irregular tours when assigned and when ample notice can be given from Management.
Maintains adequate supplies and pharmaceuticals used in the department
Prepares room, equipment and contrast materials (if necessary) as needed for patients.
Cleans and changes linen as needed
Independently makes standard examinations.
Keeps abreast of technological advances in the fields of Radiology.
Work Schedule: Multiple Tours: Monday-Friday (7:00am-3:30pm) (8:00am-4:30pm) (11:30am-8:00pm)

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic Radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.
Certification: Must be certified in general Radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT)(R).
English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d)
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following specialized experience and technical KSAs:
Grade Determinations: Canidates must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower level. Examples of experience include:
Independently provide services in special and complex imaging procedures clinical instruction, and basic quality management type duties.
And,
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques, including concepts of accumulated dosage, dose monitoring, and genetic changes.
Ability to utilize advanced imaging software that supports complex imaging programs and recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might result in increased exposures, and ability to recommend methods to prevent such exposures.
Knowledge of basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of x-ray, to understand the operation of the equipment.
Knowledge and skill in positioning of patients for a wide variety of highly complex imaging (CT, MRI, IR, ultrasound, mammography) studies.]

The vacancy is being announced above the full performance level as a GS-10.
Physical Requirements: ???????The work requires long periods of standing and physical exertion. The incumbent will lift and bend frequently to position patients for testing. Reaching and stretching is required to set up equipment; pushing and pulling ambulato1y equipment is necessary between patient care areas. He/she will also be required to walk long distances between testing areas. Dexterity is required. All the above physical demands must be performed while wearing approved radiation safety equipment.

This position is eligible for
the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
