The incumbent serves as MRI Lead Technologist, oversees, plans, and develops activities of the MRI Service to assure optimum patient care, quality control and economically efficient performance of all activities. The incumbent will lead a group of GS-10 employees that are trained to work in one or more difficult and complex modalities performing procedures related to these modalities as well as intermediate Quality Management duties.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Coordinates technologist's schedule. Makes changes in workflow or assignment of functions to positions to improve workflow, services rendered, promote job satisfaction, increase productivity, and ensure emergent work is done promptly and efficiently. Oversees MRI scheduling and providing coverage when unexpected staff shortages occur during regular and irregular tours-of-duty. Performs all duties of MRI technologist when required. Recommends to higher authority changes that may increase costs or affect employees' status, limit services rendered, or affect work outside the diagnostic section. Develops budget requirements based on experience, anticipated workload, and production capability of work force. Prepares formal requests and recommendations for promotions, reassignments, quality increases, or performance awards. Responsible for all safety regulations and practice in Imaging Service. Participates in staff meetings, reviews MRI policies, rules, and regulations, procedures, using expertise in MRI to recommend changes to department leadership. Keeps MRI employees informed of management goals and objectives. Orders supplies Actively seeks out work when assigned tasks are finished. Proactively identifies administrative, clinical, or mechanical problems, and defines solutions thereof. Lead Technologist accepts duties/assignments outside of his/her normal workstation for purposes of receiving additional training, and to provide needed coverage as determined by his/her supervisor based on patient workload shift/changes, leave and availability of personnel. Lead Technologist advises the Radiologist of those examinations which require immediate attention while the patient is undergoing the examination. Cooperates with all personnel in the proper conduct of the service. In the event that call is approved, the incumbent will participate in call after hours (weekdays, weekends, and holidays). In the event of MRI staffing shortages, the Lead MRI Technologist will perform unscheduled hours/overtime. Quality Management (QM) Duties: Perform daily inspection of the MRI equipment to ensure proper mechanical functionality. Coordinate scheduling of preventative maintenance for MRI equipment. Maintain accurate records. Work with the physicist to ensure compliance with MRI safety program. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic Radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. Certification: Must be certified in general Radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT)(R). English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following specialized experience and technical KSAs: Grade Determinations: Canidates must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower level. Examples of experience include: Have expert MRI specialization. Training, developing and directing the MR Safety program. Coordination of safety meetings. Evaluation of hospital equipment to ensure safe operation. And, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Skill in directing on-the-job training for employees. Ability to evaluate work performance of lower level employees and recommend performance ratings. Skill in technical planning and oversight to set and adjust work priorities, and [ensure] that work requirements are met based on employee capabilities. Ability to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including knowledge of growth and development.. Knowledge of medical center, VHA, and government-wide human resources management regulations, policies, and procedures. References: VA Handbook 5005/119 PART II APPENDIX G25 The vacancy is being announced above the full performance level as a GS-11. Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing and physical exertion. The incumbent will lift and bend frequently to position patients for testing. Reaching and stretching is required to set up equipment; pushing and pulling ambulato1y equipment is necessary between patient care areas. He/she will also be required to walk long distances between testing areas. Dexterity is required. All the above physical demands must be performed while wearing approved radiation safety equipment.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
