The position is located in the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Office of the Commissioner.
This position is inside the bargaining unit.
Duties
The BLS headquarters is currently located in Washington, D.C. but is in the process of relocating within the National Capital Area to the Suitland Federal Center in Suitland, Maryland. If selected for this position, your assigned duty station will be Washington, D.C with the option to telework from an approved telework site within the locality pay area of Washington, D.C./Baltimore/Arlington while the future headquarters is being built. Upon completion of the new headquarters offices in Suitland, MD, you will be required to report onsite to the Suitland Federal Center for some portion of each pay period after receiving notification to do so.
The duties described are for the GS-12 level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope and performed with less independence and complexity. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Performs analysis on economic information and data collected in various statistical surveys and/or for publications for all BLS programs
Reviews, edits, and/or compiles data for BLS programs and related projects
Prepares written products in final, which may include results of research and special studies, technical reports, bulletins, or analytical articles for other governmental and non-governmental publications
Leads special studies related to BLS programs and related projects such as the development of special questions to be added to surveys, detailed analysis of particular economic developments, or the analysis of economic issues
Independently provides advice and interpretation to data users and reviews documents for technical adequacy
Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
- Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
Qualifications
You must meet the Basic Requirements listed in the Education Requirements section and the Specialized Experience to qualify for an Economist, as described below.
BASIC REQUIREMENT
A) Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
OR
B) Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE
Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
GS-11: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-09, in the federal service. Specialized experience includes:
Making comparisons of economic data and preparing reports on findings for referral to senior staff members;
Providing input for the development, maintenance, and updating of economic databases and processing systems;
Participating as a team member on a project team requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information.
GS-12: Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-11, in the federal service. Specialized experience includes:
Providing advisory services on economic issues to internal or external customers;
Utilizing statistical software packages to analyze data and prepare tables, graphs, or reports for a variety of audiences;
Serving as a co-lead or lead on a project team requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information
OR
Education Substitution:
GS-11: Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D degree or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree.
GS-12: There is not an education substitution at this grade level.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience:
GS-11: An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.) that when combined totals one year.
GS-12: There is not an education substitution at this grade level.
