About the Position: This position is located in the Patient Admission Department, Director for Administration, Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Virginia. The primary purpose of this position is to act as Admissions/Disposition and eligibility technician in an acute care facility of 469 beds representing 43 medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties with approximately 25,000 admission per year, to act as bed manager and to perform the final disposition of all patients.
Duties
MHS Genesis outpatient registrations, inpatient admissions, guarantor/insurance, and lifetime pharmacy encounters (LPE).
Process birth and paternity applications, bed management fundamentals, safekeeping of patient valuables, facilitate sign language interpretation and foreign language translation programs by:
Document in the electronic health record, familiarity with third party insurance carriers, and providing support for Level II trauma program.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
- This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).

GS 05
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: responding to written, telephonic, and "walk-in" inquiries in a timely manner; provide forms, current literature and provides verbal instructions to patients on a variety of health programs and eligibility criteria; develop reports for management. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university in a field such as Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Management, Health Information Management, or a related field. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
GS 06
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: prepare reports and/or correspondence from automated systems; perform initial screening of patients; collect and transmits medical documentation to consulting providers This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05)

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, in a field such as Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Management, Health Information Management, or a related field. OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.
GS 07
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: utilizing digital and automated tools; marking and maintaining files; composing correspondence; perform initial screening and interviewing patients to assess their needs. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06)

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, in a field such as Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Management, Health Information Management, or a related field. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. Time in Grade Requirement:
To qualify for a GS-05 applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-03).
To qualify for a GS-06 applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).
To qualify for a GS-07 applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
Education
