The Radiology Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the general diagnostic radiography area leading multiple techs at the GS-09 level. He/she works closely with the technologists, radiologists, clinicians, and clerical staff to ensure efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic exam results, optimum quality control, patient and staff satisfaction.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Imaging Professional Inventory Control: Ensures that adequate quantities of general diagnostic supplies are available to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt, and inventory control. Assures that procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies at all times with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Technologist Staff Scheduling: Oversees staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations, monthly work, and on-call schedules. Reports absences and tardiness to Imaging Manager and timekeeper. Recommends the reassignment of technologists if necessary due to call-ins or increased /decreased workload. Ensures timely communication and submission of scheduling information to maintain payroll data accuracy as well as optimal staffing coverage. Serves as a representative for the Imaging department on committees/functions. Staff Training: Trains new employees' in general diagnostic radiography. Assists in the development of formal orientation, training, trains new employees in general radiology section on PACS, and evaluation programs. Recommends new or modified procedures/protocols in coordination with the radiologist and management. Instructs other technologists on specialized tasks and new/modified procedures and policies. Participates in the education of Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists (DRT) as well as students, residents, and other staff through departmental in services for the purpose of enhancing the personal and professional development of others within the medical service. Participates in the evaluation of employees. Equipment Maintenance/Repair: Coordinates the repair and installation of diagnostic equipment. Recommends equipment improvements, repairs, upgrades, etc. Participates in developing specifications for new equipment requests. Participates in developing service contract specifications. Follows a quality control program. Independently performs diagnostic radiography procedures with and without the use of contrast materials. Responsible for radiation exposure data collection. Ensures compliance with all EEO policies as they relate to Diagnostic Imaging Service and the Medical Center's affirmative action plan Directs the work activities of approximately nine plus Diagnostic Radiologic technologists, 24 hours a day/7 days a weeks. Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Registered) Prior to imaging, incumbent selects and sets protocols for each individualized patient examination. Performs high quality imaging services for this facility -Performs portable radiographic exams throughout this facility Perform exams in the areas of radiography, fluoroscopy, mobile/portable radiography Safely transfers patients from stretcher or wheelchair to radiographic table Anticipates the imaging and equipment needs before and during the procedures Follows the progress of the procedure and facilitated flow Prepares room, equipment, and material needed for patient procedures Follows prescribed protocols required to perform procedures Observes patients during procedures and reports complications or unusual events Utilize independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative to apply prescribed ionizing radiation for radiological diagnosis Checks and makes minor adjustments to equipment Reports equipment failure to supervisor/appropriate staff Demonstrates fundamental knowledge of the DR network and interface with the VISTA imaging and PACS and contingency procedures for manually entering patient demographics and routing images. Reviews imaging for completion Responsible for the quality assurance of the image (positioning/label/technique/network information) prior to transmission to the PACS network. Can digitize films/bum CDs for the network and/or transmission to offsite locations. Maintains the detectors/workstations (i.e.: primary/secondary plate erase, cleanliness of QA stations, etc.) as directed by the manufacturer. Reports obvious abnormalities to radiologist before patient leaves department - Maintain optimal imaging handling and processing conditions of the x-ray equipment. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic Radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. Certification: Must be certified in general Radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT)(R). English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following specialized experience and technical KSAs: Grade Determinations: Canidates must have one year of specialized experience at the next lower level. Examples of experience include: Balancing the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. Assessing factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. And, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work. Ability to resolve informal employee complaints.. Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures. Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations. Preferred Experience: ???????Three years of Lead DRT experience. Physical Requirements: Lifting up to 40 lbs, light carrying under 20 lbs, ability to reposition patients, use of fingers and both hands required, walking 2 hours, standing 2 hours, both eyes required for depth perception, ability to distinguish shades of color, hearing (aid permitted), emotional and mental stability, near and far vision of 20/40 or better (corrective lenses permitted)
