About the Position: Become a part of the largest graduate professional military education institution in the nation! This is a full-time faculty position as provided under Title 10 USC 4021. Initial appointment may be up to three years, the first of which may be a trial period. Appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments thereafter. Academic rank and salary will be based on academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments.

Duties

Serve as an expert on Middle East security affairs, emphasizing U.S. Defense policy and strategies and U.S. relations with the Arab Gulf, especially Saudi Arabia. Serve as an expert on military capabilities of regional actors (specifically land power). Be conversant on U.S. security cooperation efforts to build partner capacity in the Middle East and be able to assess. Provide analysis of emerging strategic issues and opportunities, national security initiatives, national security and defense policy, strategy, and concepts, and regional military policy and strategy formulation procedures and systems. Analyze the impact of non-state actors in shaping the region's security situation. Analyze the influence of Middle East energy sector economics on regional security. Conduct and disseminate independent strategic analysis and research that provide recommendations for defense priorities and strategies for addressing key national security objectives. Perform research, write, and publish SSI studies, journal articles, policy-oriented essays, special reports, books, and book chapters. Respond to specific requests from the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, the Army and Joint Staffs, Office of the Secretary of Defense, U.S. Central and U.S. Army Central Commands, or other elements of the Defense enterprise. Regularly engage and coordinate with senior military headquarters in the region and external agencies on behalf of SSI and the USAWC. Engage in and occasionally lead collective (i.e., study group-based) cross-functional research and analysis teams. Assist in organizing SSI and USAWC professional collaboration, conferences, seminars, symposiums, and meetings. Contribute to the USAWC educational mission with respect to Middle East security; teach, lecture, advise fellow faculty, mentor student research, and assist education curriculum development. Engage in academic service (internal and external) in support of institutional research and education missions.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Must comply with the Drug Testing Program requirements (pre-employment testing and random testing after being appointed).
  • This position has a travel requirement up to 25% of the time.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens This is a full-time term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 3 years. Appointment may be extended in one- to five-year increments thereafter. Qualification Requirements: Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position; or Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field; or Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, applicants will be rated on the following: SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): 1. Degree in Middle East political, history, or regional Studies, national security studies, international relations, defense studies, or related field. Doctorate preferred. Doctoral students within six months of completing the degree are eligible (and encouraged) to apply. 2. Primary subject-matter expertise in Middle East regional security issues, Iranian and U.S. partner security and defense policies, strategies, military capabilities. Additional expertise in non-military aspects of Iranian power and influence to include economics/finance, information/scientific, society/culture, and other aspects is desired. 3. Record of scholarly and/or applied research and publication, in national security, regional defense or military policy and strategy, history, trans-regional studies (Middle East), or related areas. Working with interdisciplinary teams to examine strategic issues and conduct rigorous analytical research is desired. 4. Regional language proficiency in Arabic or Farsi is preferred. 5. Established record of teaching and curriculum development at the undergraduate, graduate, and/or Senior Service College level is preferred. 6. A record of successful government service involving defense policy and strategy formulation at the regional/strategic level, or non-governmental work of a similar nature and scope, such as with a think tank, media organization, or international organization is desired, but not required.
