About the Position:
This is a full-time civilian faculty position as provided under Title 10 USC 4021. Initial appointment may be up to three years, the first of which may be a trial period. The appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments. Academic rank and salary will be based on the selectee's academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments; however, the focus is at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.
Duties
Serve as an expert on U.S.-China military affairs and Chinese defense and military capabilities
Conduct and disseminate independent strategic analysis and research that develops recommendations for addressing key regional security objectives, specifically focused on U.S.-China military security issues and U.S. defense (and Army) priorities
Provide analysis of emerging strategic threats and opportunities, regional security initiatives, regional security and defense policy, strategy, and concepts, and regional military policy and strategy formulation procedures and systems
Perform research, write, and publish SSI studies, journal articles, policy-oriented essays, special reports, books and book chapters
Respond to specific requests from the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, the Army Staff, the Joint Staffs, Office of the Secretary of Defense, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, U.S. Army-Pacific Command or other elements of the Defense enterprise
Regularly engage and coordinate with senior military headquarters and external agencies on behalf of SSI and the USAWC
Engage in and potentially lead collective (i.e., study group-based) cross-functional research and analysis (R and A) teams
Assist SSI and USAWC leadership in establishing a new research center dedicated to the study of Chinese military affairs and serves as an integral member of this center
Assist in organizing SSI and USAWC professional collaboration, conferences, seminars, symposiums, and meetings
Contribute to the USAWC educational mission, emphasis on U.S.-China military affairs and Chinese defense and joint military capabilities; teach, lecture, advise fellow faculty, mentor student research, and assist education curriculum development
Engage in academic service (internal and external) in support of institutional research and education missions
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET security clearance.
- Must comply with the Drug Testing Program requirements (pre-employment testing and random testing after being appointed).
- Must be available for employment not later than 31 MAR 2024. Earlier arrival and onboarding is welcomed and preferred.

Define KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
1. Must have relevant career experience, or an advanced degree (Master's or PhD), in national security studies, international relations, defense studies, history, lndo-Pacific affairs, Asian studies, or a related field.
2. Primary subject-matter expertise should be in Chinese defense and military capabilities or U.S.-China military affairs. Additional expertise in Chinese ground force capabilities specifically is desired. Further expertise in broader Indo-Pacific security affairs and US-Asia defense matters is desired.
3. Record of scholarly and/or applied research and publication, in regional defense or military policy and strategy, history, trans-regional studies (Indo-Pacific; Asia), or related areas.
4. Record of working with interdisciplinary teams to examine strategic issues and conduct rigorous analytical research is desired.
5. Regional language proficiency in Mandarin is preferred.
6. An established record of teaching and curriculum development at the undergraduate, graduate, and/or Senior Service College level is preferred.
7. A record of successful government service involving defense policy and strategy formulation at the regional/strategic level, or non-governmental work of a similar nature and scope, such as with a think tank, academic research institute, or international organization is desired, but not required.
