About the Position: Performs a wide variety of the more complex production, disassembly, closed disposal (e.g., incineration, chemical plant operations, magnesium recovery), rework or maintenance/renovation operations of conventional ammunition, munitions, pyrotechnics, and explosives.
Duties

Examples include but are not limited to: mortar/artillery/gun projectiles, pyrotechnic illumination candles, decoy flares, warheads, mines, bombs, demolition charges, grenades, burster charges, propelling charges, impulse cartridges, explosive melt
In addition to operating machines and equipment types - grit blast, hydraulic presses, automatic and semi-automatic loading and assembly machines, degreasers, buffers paint spray equipment, delicate scales, spray guns.
Duties also encompass component control management, inert operations, and/or formulation of mixes.
Energetic and explosive materiel includes but is not limited to: various illumination compositions for visual and infrared pyrotechnic candles, various smoke and signal marker compositions, decoy flare compositions, slurry mixes, propellant
Provides exterior maintenance of cartridge tanks, ammunition component boxes, smokeless powder tanks/cans, depth charge/line charge containers, pallets, adapters, and similar inert metal/plastic or wooden parts.
In repetitive work, receives brief assignments that cover changes to established procedures and works independently.
Inherent to the position is adjusting to any job operations amongst the four manufacturing core competencies (countermeasures, demilitarization, ordnance, and pyrotechnics) within the organization.
Supports continuous improvement activities to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
Requirements
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
- Position requires obtaining and maintaining an Explosives Certificate.
- Must possess and maintain base driving privileges. Installation driving privileges are automatically granted unless suspended or revoked.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a forklift license.
- Must be able to be respirator certified without restrictions.
- Some operations may require heavy lifting and pushing or pulling hand trucks weighing several hundred pounds.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Explosives Operator without more than normal supervision.
1) Operate machines such as grit blast, hydraulic presses, automatic and semi-automatic loading and assembly machines, degreasers, buffers or paint spray equipment in a production environment; 2) Properly use and care for the tools and equipment for safe work operation; AND 3) Repair and recondition ammunition containers and cartridge cases for safe storage of ammunition. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical demands are arduous. At times it is necessary to lift heavy items for long periods of time at production rates. Kneeling, standing, bending and other awkward positions are necessary at times, as well as pushing or pulling of heavily loaded carts and/or hand trucks. Some areas will require the use of respirators.
Working conditions vary with the type of assignment. The majority of work is performed indoors. Occasionally works outside, which requires exposure to inclement weather conditions such as rain, snow, and ice. May work in unheated and poorly illuminated magazines and warehouses. Explosive hazards, depending on the type of job, are ever present. Exposed to the danger of explosion and fire while working with exposed explosives, chemicals, loaded ammunition, explosive-contaminated water, hazardous waste, and deteriorated or damaged ammunition in an armed or ready to fire status. Exposed to acids, toxins, caustics, grit, explosive dust, explosive steam vapor, and paint fumes. When handling certain explosives, may be subject to poisoning, skin irritations, rashes, violent headaches, nausea, and dizziness. Subject to possible injury from use of hand tools and machinery. Possible injuries range from cuts and bruises, loss of eyes and fingers, and permanent physical impairments to loss of limbs and fatalities.
