About the Position: Serves as working leader of three or more employees in accomplishing trades and labor work. The highest level of nonsupervisory work led is Explosives Operator WG-6502-07.

Duties

Passes on to other workers instructions received from supervisor, demonstrates proper work methods, and begins daily work. Ensures needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available and needed stock is obtained from supply locations. Ensures there is enough work to keep everyone in work teams busy. Checks work in progress and when finished ensures work is in compliance with supervisor's instructions on work sequences, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Encourages or advises other employees to follow supervisor's instructions and meet deadlines. Answers worker questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (e.g., technical orders). Provides information to supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems (e.g., additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees). Ensures safety and housekeeping rules are followed in accordance with standard operating procedures (e.g., ensures machine capacities are not exceeded and tools are properly used).

Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Position requires obtaining and maintaining an Explosives Certificate.
  • This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • Must possess and maintain base driving privileges.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a forklift license.
  • Must be able to be respirator certified without restrictions.
  • Some operations may require heavy lifting and pushing or pulling hand trucks weighing several hundred pounds.

Incumbent will be required in some instances to be exposed to large amounts of sensitive explosives. Some operations may require heavy lifting and pushing or pulling hand trucks weighing several hundred pounds. Ninety-five percent of the jobs require standing and walking on concrete throughout the day. In addition to standing and walking, many jobs require bending, reaching, and crouching on various compositions. Many operations, such as weighing and pouring powder, pressing and drilling explosives, and painting ammunition require the setting of a rapid work pace for long periods of time. Close attention of the eyes is required in the segregation and inspection of ammunition. The use of different colored dyes, paints and explosives requires normal color vision. Incumbent will be frequently exposed to moisture and wet floors and to fumes from acids and explosives. Likewise, will be exposed to the possibility of explosion and flash fires. In handling certain explosives, the operator is subject to possible poisoning, skin irritation, rashes, violent headaches, nausea, dizziness and injury. It is possible while performing work in this area to suffer injury such as: minor cuts and bruises, permanent physical impairment (e.g. loss of eyes, fingers or limbs), sterility or loss of life. Working conditions vary with type of assignment and is performed in environmentally controlled buildings, outdoors and in unheated and poorly illuminated magazines and warehouses. In rare instances will be required to be exposed to such inclement weather conditions as rain, snow and ice. Is exposed to toxic fumes, explosive dust, unpleasant odors and noise. Skin and hair may be discolored from contact with certain explosives and dyes. Will be required to wear protective clothing such as specially treated coveralls, respirators, goggles, powder suits and cotton undergarments and other special safety wear during all working hours.
