This position is located in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Office of Compliance (AC), Business Improvement Section (ACB). This position(s) primary purpose is to serve as a data manager and expert advisor and recognized expert who performs professional and scientific work requiring design, development, and adaptation of mathematical, statistical, econometric, and other scientific methods and techniques.

As a Data Scientist, your typical work assignments may include: Providing expert data analytics services and consultation supporting DEA programs and operations. Employing a variety of data mining and data analysis methods using a variety of data tools, building and implementing models, simulations among others, to drive results initiated from data-based insights. Providing guidance and assistance to lower level analysts or personnel testing and developing new data models. Guiding stakeholders internal to DEA to identify opportunities for leveraging enterprise data to drive identification of compliance issues. Conducting presentations and communicating findings to diverse audiences, tailoring the message to suit the technical understanding and interests of each group.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the Basic Requirement and Specialized Experience requirements as noted below. Qualification claims will be subject to verification. Basic Requirement: Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position, OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in the paragraph above, plus additional education or appropriate experience. Specialized Experience: GS-13: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to a GS-12: 1) Performing work efforts that require research, investigation, data analysis or translation of data; 2) Conducting data research and analyses using best practice methodologies; 3) Identifying major problems when conducting data research and performing modeling related work. GS-14: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to a GS-13: 1) Leading work efforts that require research, investigation, data analysis or translation of data; 2) Determining the best methodologies to use when conducting data research and analyses; 3) Anticipating major problems when conducting data research and performing modeling related work. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience for this position includes: Competencies: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competencies in the following areas: Database Management SystemsProject ManagementTechnical Competence Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F).
