About the Position: Serves as principal Safety and Occupational Health Specialist at the Corps and Division level of an Army Command or equivalent. The program embraces a diversity of high risk factors to meet training and mission readiness requirements located on Joint Base Lewis McChord, WA.

Duties

Participate in management responsibilities including formulation, development, organization, execution, and assessment of a comprehensive safety program. Provide technical safety advice and assistance to commanders, primary and special staff officers, tactical specialists, and other professional specialists on matters pertaining to military operations and activities. Evaluates all safety program initiatives, policies, standard operating procedures and processes. Collect, maintain, and analyze relevant safety data to support the Commander’s accident prevention goals. Provide technical assistance and guidance to major unit commanders, staff officers, and supervisors on all work relating to compliance and application of Army and OSHA Standards. Monitors work areas and evaluates activities with higher risk of injury or potentially hazardous conditions. Conduct assessments, analyzes severity of hazards, develops and implements control measures. Manages the safety awards program. Provide safety education and training opportunities. Develops lesson plans, support material, specialized safety courses, promotes safety campaign materials and ensures safety standards are published in appropriate training manuals. Monitors safety improvement programs to evaluate the effectiveness of training. Promote safety awareness information and literature by all methods of communication. Implement policy and procedures within the broad framework of Army and DOD goals and objectives, federal/state legislation/statutes. Develop safety standards, policies, and procedural guidelines for high-risk operations where no standards exist.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess, or obtain and maintain, a valid regular or official U.S. Passport.
  • This position is subject to a mobility or rotation agreement as a condition of employment.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 50% of the time.
  • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons in accordance with Army Regulation 40-562, Chapters 3 and 4.
  • This position requires immunizations prior to deployment.
  • The incumbent must sign DD Form 2365(DoD Civilian Employee Overseas Emergency - Essential Position Agreement).
  • This is a deployable Department of the Army Civilian position. As such, incumbent must receive and maintain up-to-date required immunizations for the overseas or deployed location.
  • Incumbent must complete all required training and achieve the CP-12 Level 1 and Explosives Safety Level 1 professional certificates within 12 months, or prior to deployment, as outlined in the 0018 job series Master Training Plan.
