You will serve as a COMPUTER SCIENTIST in the LINUX SYSTEMS BRANCH of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.
This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
GS-9: $66,732 - $86,750
GS-7: $55,815 - $72,561
Duties
You will perform as a system administrator for Linux/Unix based scientific oceanographic production information systems.
You will install, configure, modify, and maintain functionality of operating systems (OS).
You will manage computer systems and technologies in support of user requirements that include integrated desktop high-speed graphics capabilities, integrated network file services, and near-real time data receipt and processing.
You will ensure system installations, configurations, and modifications are in accordance with information assurance (IA) technical controls for IT capabilities within assigned area of responsibility.

- This is a Cyberspace Workforce position, work role code 451, the incumbent is required to obtain and maintain qualifications in DoDM 8140.03 Cyber Workforce Qualification and Department of Navy policies.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
Qualifications
GS-09:
In addition to the basic education requirement, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience applying knowledge and experience with Linux/Unix based operating systems.
Experience performing assigned segments of a project or conventional projects which involve commonly used methods and techniques, pertinent standards, and minor adaptation.
Experience using sound judgment in selecting alternative solutions suggested by the supervisor and in developing recommendations and plans on projects assigned.
Experience communicating verbally and in writing to present briefings and participate in working groups and conferences.
GS-07:
In addition to the basic education requirement, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience applying a general knowledge and experience with Linux/Unix based operating systems.
Experience applying knowledge of computer science principles and practices.
Experience using sound judgment in selecting alternative solutions suggested by the supervisor and in developing recommendations and plans on projects assigned.
Experience communicating verbally and in writing.

Education
Applicants must meet the following basic education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree in computer science OR bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.
There are no educational substitutions for basic education requirements. Basic education requirements are required for this position. However, the following are educational substitutions for specialized experience.
GS-9:
Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
Successful completion of two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree.
OR
A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.
GS-7:
Successful completion of one year of graduate-level education.
OR
Superior academic achievement.
OR
A combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience.
