About the Position: This position is located at Arlington National Cemetery. Incumbent plans and lays out work, and estimates materials and equipment needed to complete a variety of general maintenance tasks.

Duties

Maintain, repair, alter, and construct exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of various type of brick, block and stone. Lay brick, flagstone, granite, terra-cotta, cement block and various stones in constructing and repairing walls, walks, chimneys, fireplaces, foundations, etc. Perform installation and repair work on concrete curbs, gutters, foundations, walls, steps, patios, sidewalks, manholes and other concrete structures. Build and install forms requiring precision in measurements and settings. Use electric, acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding process to make a wide range of welds from simple to precision welding. Replace or repair faucets, valves, sewer and water lines, drinking fountains, and hydrants by installing gaskets, washers, springs, clamps, and piping. Maintain all cemetery roads by breaking up damaged portions of roadway and patching with asphalt using shovel, rake, and tamper. Must be able to work with copper, lead, steel, iron and plastic pipe.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must possess, maintain and be able to retain a current valid state or DC driver's license.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain, maintain and retain a valid government vehicle operator’s license. May be required to transport others in and around the cemetery.
  • In accordance with Change 3 to AR 600-85, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Program, employee must successfully pass a urinalysis screening for illegal drug use prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.

Installing, maintaining and repairing of plumbing systems; applying masonry skills; performing cement finishing including repair work on concrete foundations; applying carpentry skills; making a wide range of welds from simple to precision welding; reading drawings and determining size or dimensions from blueprints. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility To Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKNOWLEDGE OF EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION, REPAIR, ETC.Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) PHYSICAL EFFORTS Lifts objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance and up to 100 pounds with assistance or mechanical aid. Work requires extensive standing, kneeling, walking, bending, climbing, crawling and stooping and working in uncomfortable positions. Exerts considerable effort using equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed inside and outside in all types of weather. Exposed to dust and dirt and subject to cuts, bruises, falls from ladders, and burns from plumbing equipment and hot tar.
