Duties
The Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) in the Office of the Director is offering two detail opportunities to serve as the Acting Section Chief, Programs and Analysis Section and the Countries and Regions Section. This detail is open to all qualified NSF employees and will not exceed one year in 120-day increments. For purposes of pay and benefits, the selectee will continue to encumber the position from which detailed.
The Acting Section Chiefs serve as members of the office's leadership and management teams, supervising 7 to 9 program staff. The incumbents serve as the Office's principal spokespersons in international interdisciplinary research and programs and/or science diplomacy.
The Programs & Analysis (P&A) Section Chief is responsible to the OISE Deputy Office Head for the overall planning, development, management, and commitment of OISE-managed programs that include Accelerating Research through International Network-to-Network Collaborations program (AccelNet), Global Centers (GC), and International Research Experiences for Students (IRES). The P&A Section Chief also serves as the Office's primary source of guidance concerning programmatic activities in any area of research supported by NSF with expertise in program management.
The Countries & Regions (C&R) Section Chief is responsible to the OISE Deputy Office Head for the overall planning, strategy, and development of NSF's science diplomacy. The C&R Section Chief also serves as the Office's primary source of guidance concerning international agreements, bilaterals, and multilaterals.
In addition, serving as a key members of the management team, the Acting Section Chiefs will:
Articulate and advocate for the concerns and interests of the C&R and P&A sections to OISE leadership.
Offer consultative insights and advice on strategic matters or concerns related to the sections and the broader office, leveraging the expertise and perspectives within the C&R and P&A sections.
Collaborate with other Section Chief to manage matrixed portfolios of program staff effectively.
Manages the section's workload and plans, assigns, and reviews program staff's work, ensuring timely completion of work assignments.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in an appropriate field plus after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position; OR a Master's degree in an appropriate field plus after award of the degree, eight or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.
Appropriate fields include social science, engineering, biological science, geosciences, computer and information science, mathematical and physical sciences, and STEM education.
The successful candidate will have experience in interdisciplinary research that includes managing international programs and/or science diplomacy.
