About the Position: The position is located with the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fire Protection & Prevention Division, Fire Protection Branch on Fort Stewart, GA.

Duties

Administer basic life support care to victims on the scene of a fire, accident or in the case of sudden illness. Perform initial patient focused assessments to determine priority of care. Assist in the training of firefighting crew on firefighting and prevention techniques. Respond to alarms, combat fire and hazardous situations requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks, including rescue, involving structures, equipment, facilities, crashed and burning aircraft, vehicles, chemicals, fuel storage. Employ hazard and risk assessment techniques to complete initial incident analysis. Identify potential options available in response to a hazardous materials incident. Operate pumps, turrets, deluge nozzles, foam generators, and other similar equipment, predicting the requirements of firefighters that are engaged in the process of fire suppression and rescue operations. Serve as the driver-operator of one or more types of fire fighting vehicles, e.g., pumpers, crash/rescue trucks, hazardous material response vehicles, mobile water supplier aircraft rescue fire fighting vehicles (ARFF).

Requirements

  • Heavy physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects such as cylinders and extinguishers weighing 45 lbs. or more. Employee may be required to lift/carry personnel in emergency situations.
  • This position requires the incumbent must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.5M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a current, valid state motor vehicle operator license to operate vehicles up to one ton.
  • This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program. The incumbent must pass a pre-employment drug screen and submit to announced or unannounced periodic drug screens.
  • Employee must remain clean-shaven to insure integrity of mask fit for breathing apparatus.
  • Works 24-hour rotating shifts, 72 hours a week, and 144 hours per pay period.
  • Incumbent may be required to work overtime as the need arises.
  • Performs occasional Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) 5% of the time for the purpose of obtaining specialized training and other fire and emergency services duties.
  • Participates in and meets and/or exceeds the standards of the DoD Firefighter Physical Fitness Program.
  • This position is designated as mission essential during inclement weather, fire, hazardous duty and other emergency operations.
  • This position requires that the incumbent obtain and maintain a valid National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI) investigation.
  • Employee must maintain current Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (CPR and AED) card.
  • This position is subject to an initial drug screening, and random testing thereafter. A negative drug test result must be received by human resources within 30 calendar days after the Entrance on Duty (i.e., start date).
  • Selectee’s inability to successfully pass or refusal to conduct the drug test may result in the job offer being withdrawn during the recruitment process or subsequently being removed from Federal service for failure to meet a condition of employment.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Selective Placement Factor: This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain ALL of the following Department of Defense, DOD Fire and Emergency Services Fire Fighter Certifications: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Airport Firefighter, Hazardous Materials Technician, Driver Operator ARFF, and Driver Operator Pumper (in accordance with DoD Instruction 6055.6 and DoD Manual 6055.6M.) Employee must certification. National or State Registry issued Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) certification.
