Duties
Serve as an Assistant Fire Chief for fire protection operations.
Perform one on one counseling with subordinates to resolve problems and complaints.
Assumes operational control at emergency incidents directing firefighting crews until relieved.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Work hours are 72 hours weekly; 144 hours bi-weekly.
- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
- This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
- This position requires heavy lifting up to 45 lbs.
- This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one-year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
- Must wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Current Army Employees: One year Specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) assuming command of all activities at the scene of a fire; (3) investigating the outcome of occurrences to determine the adequacy of actions taken by subordinates in combating the fire; and (4) assessing the nature and extent of fire to determine resource requirements.
External applicants: One year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) assuming command of all activities at the scene of a fire; (3) investigating the outcome of occurrences to determine the adequacy of actions taken by subordinates in combating the fire; and (4) assessing the nature and extent of fire to determine resource requirements. (4) serving as a senior administrative staff member sharing in the overall management of the division (5) directing operational activities for fire stations including care and maintenance of equipment and facilities (6) reviewing updates and recommending changes to division standard operating procedures and guidelines.
DOD FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
To occupy this position, at the time of appointment the incumbent must possess and then continue to maintain the following DoD Firefighter certification levels: Fire Officer III Fire Instructor II Fire Inspector II HAZMAT Incident Commander Airport Firefighter.
