About the Position: Join us at the United States Southern Command. We provide direct support to a four-star unified Combatant Commander, but are compact enough that our staff also works with senior leadership representatives of our inter-service, inter-agency and (public and private) international partner organizations. Our contribution to furthering our country's relationships with Caribbean, South and Central American nations and peoples are substantial.

Duties

Provide input and prepare CDRUSSOUTHCOM regional policy correspondence to foreign officials, the Joint Staff U.S. Ambassadors, and the Secretaries of State and Defense on Latin America issues. Identify political-military issues for current and future impact on the Command and conduct analysis of their implications and alternatives. Conduct analysis with finished intelligence products to generate political-military fact sheets, information papers, decision papers, and other products for the CDRUSSOUTHCOM and senior staff. Act as the primary political-military affairs expert for the region and countries assigned, analyze message traffic, embassy communications, and open-source information. Act as the political-military staff officer and represent the organization in conferences, exercises, peace talks, treaty negotiations, and other special political-military functions.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Applicant will be required to obtain a TOP SECRET SCI clearance.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Position requires travel up to 20% of the time.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • Frequent use of Spanish (Defense Language Proficiency Test equivalent of 2+ in listening, 2+ in reading, and basic conversational ability) to read source material, and infrequently act as interpreter and/or document translator.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12 or above). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Communications and MediaPlanning and EvaluatingTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
