This position is located in the Phlebotomy unit at the Samuel S. Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, New York.
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Performs a wide variety of blood collection of a responsible nature requiring a representative knowledge of clinical science to understand the multiplicity of tests and specimen requirements, the mechanic of venipuncture and patient preparation.
Performs all clerical duties required of the position, including work lists, logs, etc.
Instruct students, volunteers and trainees in the performance of phlebotomy and test procedures.
Sets up equipment for all phlebotomy procedures.
Transports specimens to the laboratory including those requiring special handling.
Cleans, disinfects and sterilizes equipment and ancillary equipment according to Medical Center Policies and Procedures.
Other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirements:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
AND
GS-05: EXPERIENCE - One full (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (i.e., GS-04). Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled, i.e., performing a wide variety of blood and specimen collection; setting up equipment for phlebotomy procedures; instructing others in the performance of phlebotomy and test procedures; transporting specimens to the laboratory; and performing clerical duties. GS-05: EDUCATION - Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. You must possess successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position (Health Technician). NOTE: One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. GS-05: COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION - Equivalent combinations of experience and education as described above may be used to meet the total requirements for this position. For GS-05 level position, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring periods of standing and walking. Patient care activities include bending, stooping, lifting, sitting, and stretching.
