The Samuel S Stratton VA Medical Center is currently recruiting for two Restorative Health Technicians within Geriatrics & Extended Care. The primary purpose of the position is to perform direct resident support work to include individualized exercise regimens for residents, which may include bed exercises, breathing exercises, passive and active range of motion exercises to upper and lower extremities, and initial self-care activities on pre-testing and post procedure activities.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities will include: Comply with all nursing service, facility, and unit-specific policy, procedure, standards, and protocols regarding the direct care of residents in coordination with the Restorative Coordinator RN Perform all direct resident care tasks in the Nursing Assistant role in addition to Restorative Health Technician responsibilities which include ADL's, feeding, vital signs etc Organize individual resident exercise regimens under the direction of the Restorative Coordinator RN Provide instruction to resident and family members about proper restorative nursing techniques to enhance independence in function and maintain resident's self-performance of care. Observe residents' safe and proper use of assistive devices canes, walkers, wheelchairs through verbal and physical guidance and direction. Secure resident confidence and cooperation for therapy by explaining procedures, instructing residents on care goals and intent for therapy. Adhere to infection control procedures. Monitor for changes in resident behavior, attitude, physical complaints, or appearance; reporting resident changes to the charge nurse, restorative coordinator RN, or provider Collect and label specimens. Recognize emergency situations, respond quickly and appropriately, and intervene while awaiting assistance. Perform administrative tasks such as maintaining control records for tests, document measurements taken; e.g. blood pressure, pre- and post-ambulation and finger stick results Provide routine, ongoing documentation of care provided in accordance with care plan and complete a monthly summary note to recap resident status throughout the course of treatment, noting if resident goals are met or unmet. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/01/2024. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: performing both clerical and clinical duties in a medical/healthcare environment; answering and directing phone calls; knowledge of computers and software applications to accomplish work; documenting medical records; taking and recording vital signs; ambulating patients; extensive knowledge of infection control. . OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have Half a year of graduate education (usually 9 semester hours) that is directly related to the work of this position. One full year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Transcripts required. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. Transcripts required, and experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit. . You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Clinical Data Collection/DocumentationComputer SkillsPatient CareTechnical Competence Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work involves long periods of walking, standing, and moving about the work unit. The work requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, pulling, stooping, stretching, lifting, and repositioning residents, or similar activities.
